Domaine Forey Pere & Fils

HISTORY OF DOMAINE: This small but outstanding domaine was created in 1840 by the great-grandfather of Regis Forey, the current owner/winemaker. One of the first estates to grace our portfolio (in 1982), we began our work with this gem in the village of Vosne Romanee with Jean Forey, the father of Regis. The 1987 vintage marked the entry of Regis into the domaine on a full-time basis and he became completely responsible for all aspects of production and winemaking with the 1989 vintage.

COMPOSITION OF DOMAINE: The Forey domaine now exploits 9 1/2 hectares of vineyards; 4 1/2 as proprietaire and 5 through the systems of fermage and metayage. Forey farms 15 separate parcels to create the village Vosne Romanee. Then there is a hectare in the appellation of Nuits St. Georges Village split between the vineyards of "Plantes Aux Barons" (.40 hectare) and "Charbonnieres" (.60 hectare). Forey also has a significant piece of Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Perrieres". Recently Forey has acquired access to several small parcels of Morey St. Denis (Clos Baulet and Les Crais) and Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (Les Blanchards and Clos Solon). Further, Forey cultivates vineyards in the prestigious Vosne Romanee 1er Cru "Les Petits Monts" and Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "Les St. Georges" as well as the rare Vosne Romanee 1er Cru "Les Gaudichots". Finally, this domaine is blessed with a select parcel in the Grand Cru of Echezeaux as well as a slice of Clos de Vougeot.

METHOD OF VINIFICATION: A manual harvest is followed by a 3 to 4 day cold maceration. The cuvaison usually continues for 22 to 26 days. During that time Forey does a pigeage three times a day. Malolactic occurs in barrel. There is now only one racking done during the period of elevage. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending 16 to 20 months in small oak barrels with 20% to 50% new oak used depending on the structure and amount of the individual cuvee and the character of the vintage.
