Savoie

The little-known vinous treasures of the French Alps

Over 90% of this tiny Alpine French region’s production is consumed locally by inhabitants and ski-happy tourists, and while its most well-known wines are light, bright, low-alcohol whites from the indigenous Jacquere, certain pockets of the Savoie are capable of producing magisterial, age-worthy whites and reds from such varieties as Roussanne (known locally as Bergeron), Altesse, and Mondeuse. The finest versions of these combine the earthy, broad power of the Rhône with the pure-fruited lift that characterizes the best Alpine wines.
