A day in Carema, October 2013:
“Our visit with Luigi, Roberto and Andrea Ferrando was spent mostly in discussion of the “crisis of quantity” in Carema and whether there is some way to increase access to, and control the production of, grapes within the appellation. There is no easy answer to this conundrum but, at least, the issue has been joined.
In any event, the 2010 vintage was slightly more generous than the 2009 was; so, we will have more wine (precise quantities yet to be determined) than we received this year. The wine has yet to be assembled so the tasting of the final “cuvees” from the 2010 vintage will have to be done when we visit the Ferrandos again in March. The Canavese Rosso 2012 will have to be assessed in March as well.
The upcoming vintage (2012) of Erbaluce, both the La Torrazza and Cascina Cariola, is very strong but quantities will be lower as production in 2012 was also reduced due to inclement weather conditions during the growing season. Luckily, 2013 has proven to be quite generous and our allocations will be larger the year after next when the 2013s are released.
I reserved the last 300 bottles of the ’08 Spumante, which will be arriving next spring.”
